Pickle a day
The famous Mumbai rains are back
again & the relentless pouring has started. At times the cloud cover so thick
that it is impossible to judge whether it’s day or night. Our in built laziness
also tries to match the season. So we become sluggish like local trains. On
such a day most of us don’t able to understand whether we are hungry or not.
Once you eat something you start feeling bloated, heaviness in abdomen,
somebody will have loose motions on next day. So what is the solution?
As always Ayurveda has answer.
Ayurveda states that these symptoms are because of increased Vata and decreased
Agni (Digestive Capacity) in your body. So you have to eat that will reduce
Vata and improve appetite. I will like to quote one reference from ‘Charak
Samhita’
व्यक्ताम्ल
लवणस्नेहं वातवर्षाकुलेऽहनि I
विशेष शीते भोक्तव्यं वर्षासु
अनिल शान्तये II
Here
‘व्यक्ताम्ल लवणस्नेहं’ is the key word. The food item which is Sour and Salty in test and has
abundance of oil should be eaten on a rainy day. There are a certain food items
that are considered forbidden by everybody. Pickle is surely one of them. In
fact you will never see a doctor advising you to eat Pickle. But Ayurveda is an
exception. Ayurveda advises you to eat pickle on such rainy day. See the beauty
in India pickle is prepared at the start of rainy season only. It is a great
example how Ayurveda has influenced each and every part of our life.
Pickle
is commonly prepared from Raw Mango which is sour in taste. It has salt and abundance
of Sesame or Mustard oil in it. It also contains mustard seeds, Turmeric
powder, Chilly Powder, Asafoetida i.e. Hing. All these spices help in improving
appetite. So this mixture is a perfect example of ‘व्यक्ताम्ल लवणस्नेह’.
One
should understand one has to eat just a single piece of it at given time. Eating
excess quantity is not desirable. Those who are having Pitta disorders like
acidity, ulcers, GERD, oesophagitis should stay away from it. So on a rainy day
“Pickle a day keep doctor away”
Happy Monsoon.
